Description

Consisting of live material recorded at venues ranging from the Berkeley Community Theatre and the San Diego Sports Arena to the Isle of Wight Festival, Hendrix In The West captures the guitarist exploring new directions in sound during 1969-70. Robert Christgau, the Dean of American Rock Critics, called Hendrix''s versions of "Red House" and, "Johnny B. Goode" on this album "definitive." Out of print in the US since 1974 and for more than two decades internationally, Hendrix In TheWest, has remained one of the most requested albums by fans to return to the commercial marketplace.

Hendrix In The West will be reissued as an expanded single disc featuring five additional, previously unavailable performances. The album''s iconic cover features a classic Jim Marshall photograph of the guitarist and the twenty-four page book is filled with rare and previously unseen images captured by Marshall s distinctive lens.

Track Listing includes:
The Queen
Sgt. Pepper''s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Little Wing
I Don''t Live Today
Spanish Castle Magic
RedHouse
Johnny B. Goode

This album was re-released on September 13, 2011 as part of the Hendrix family''s project to remaster Hendrix''s discography. Since the rights to the Royal Albert Hall performance of "Little Wing" and "Voodoo Child" on the original LP are in dispute, the newly released CD contains alternate performances of the two songs. Little Wing was from the Winterland concerts and Voodoo Child from San Diego concert. If you are able to find this album release prior to 2011, then you will have the Royal Albert Hall. It is also available on various bootlegs of this concert. Please note that these two songs are mislabeled San Diego. They are indeed from Royal Albert Hall.

The 2011 re-release contains 11 songs which include Fire, I don''t live today and Spanish Castle Magic which are from the San Diego Concert. The original release had a total of 8. FYI San Diego Sports Area is now Valley View Casino. The San Diego concert was available on CD 3 of the box set titled Stages. It was his last tour with Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding (drummer and bassist of the original Jimi Hendrix Experience. Stages release of San Diego was not complete. Together with this re-release you now have the complete San Diego concert! Now we just have to wait fir the Hendrix estate to release San Diego concert the its entirety.

The rarest and oddest of all albums. Various live performances from various times and venues actually has more than just great performances found on the same disc. The songs and performances were chosen carefully and then assembled coherently. Jimi''s playing and singing are stellar. The idea of collecting superb performances into a single disc of music should not have worked as perfectly as it does on ''Hendrix In The West''.

This album is cogent, coherent, and joyous. Every selection can stand on its own, yet each number supports the one before it and the one after it. This interdependency ensures that this is one of the best collections of live Hendrix.

Buy with confidence. Enjoy forever.

There are plenty of reviews of the music, so I won''t get into that too much. I want to comment on some things others have said. (I got this LP when it was new, but I haven''t heard it in a long time.)

First, about the Albert Hall recordings - apparently Jimi signed away the rights to these recordings and the family is trying to get them back. That is the reason they aren''t on this reissue.

I agree completely that the version of Little Wing on the original LP (from the Albert Hall) was the very best version. But both of the Albert Hall recordings that were on the original LP are available on the four-CD purple box set, "The Jimi Hendrix Experience".

As far as "Red House", this may be the best live version - it is certainly the one I''m most familiar with. However, I still like the original studio version better.

This album was made from recordings of several live performances. Some of the songs can be found elsewhere, but these versions have the live Hendrix touch. Some, I have not heard elsewhere. I had this on cassette, but someone borrowed it and it never came back, so I''ve been searching for a replacement for more than two decades.

I have a distinct memory of a vocal part, in which Hendrix introduces a song, "...the combined British and American National Anthems..." [some unintelligible crowd noise] "Oh, don''t get mad. Don''t get mad." If that was really from the original (like I said, it''s been along time), then it has been cut from this release. It doesn''t decrease the value of the music on this version, but it showed a bit of Hendrix'' personality that I thought was fun.

This should have been a welcome release. Out of print since 1973 in the US (however UK Polydor had this in print on vinyl for many years). The first legitimate live album that wasn''t Band Of Gypsys, this album was superbly recorded and, barring the lead in tracks recorded at the Isle Of Wight Festival in 1970, contained some fantastic performances, including the cherry of them all, the San Diego Sports Arena 1969 recording of Red House. So why was it that 2 tracks recorded at The Royal Albert Hall were missing and similar Winterland tracks were substituted, when the same Albert Hall tracks are still available on the 4CD set "The Jimi Hendrix Experience"?? Why was a substandard tape of the San Diego "Red House" used? Why indeed? Given that alterations were going to occur, why not get rid of the cr**py Isle Of Wight tracks and add some more good tracks? Also copy the San Diego "Red House" track from that same 4CD set, where it still sounds wonderful. In my opinion, this is a bad stumble by Experience Hendrix.
The included booklet is rather nice however.

First off all just for the record, I still have my vinyl "Hendrix In The West" I saved up to buy in 1984.

Anyone with a passing interest in Hendrix knows the Royal Albert Hall minefield, i.e. the supreme live versions of Little wing and Voodoo Child (Slight Return) not being available on this new release as they were on 1972s Hendrix In The West.

Does that mean you take a huff and hand out 2 or 3 stars for this release?

This is an absolute brilliant collection of Hendrix live shows. In the early 80s, a collection like this was just a dream.

Two words-San Diego. His San diego show was as impressive as the Royal Albert hall, with easily the best ever live versions of Spanish Castle Magic, Red House and I Dont Live Today (The feedback, the insertion of notes from "The Star Spangled Banner" and some great improvisational riffs all add up to a superior performance).
Add in Berkeleys, Johnny B. Goode, Lover Man, and soundcheck Blue Suede Shoes and you have the ultimate live guitar album in pristine sound.

Mixing at Electric Lady studios, production by original engineer Eddie Kramer, and a well presented glossy booklet with notes and original photos makes this for me, even without the original live versions, possibly even better than the original.

As much as it pains me to say this about one of my music heroes, this album is lacking in a number of areas. You will no doubt be screaming "why is this geezer giving this release such a poor review "? As I am in the minority with this release, hopefully I will be able to articulate my reasons. When it comes to compilation releases, there are 3 major dangers. 1) Which tracks do include on a compilation? I always have great sympathy for the compilers. As the old saying goes "you can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time". You get my drift here. 2) Live compilations. Again, the compilers are on a hiding to nothing. Do they play it safe and maybe go for one or even two venues? Some venues may have had better Live sound reproduction than others. We now move onto probably the most fraught area, which is my number 3. 3) Multi venue Live compilations. This is an absolute minefield for the compilers. Depending on the source material, depends on how good the sound quality will be! On this occasion the sound quality is decent. I have a number of live compilations of Jimi and various other bands. Those various releases have excelled in not only their sound reproduction, but also with their "stitching together the live tracks ". I have mentioned "stitching " for a reason. When live tracks that are taken from multiple venues or even years, those engineers create a seamless transition. In essence, it sounds like you listening to a one venue live gig. Unfortunately, on this release, even with the so called expert engineer plus theassistant, this is not the case here. Rather than sound an effortless recording, it sounds contrived. When you look at the many live recordings of Jimi''s music, this is a tragic release. There are a couple of tracks where there was more emphasis on the drums.
